Integrated Physical Medicine

Headaches & Migraines

All of us suffer from headaches or migraines at some point in our life. And when you have either one, the pain can be debilitating. Wishing or hoping they will just go away is never a good plan and medicine can only do so much. There are many root causes of headaches and migraines and you can find out more about them below.

At IPM, we will provide immediate treatment for headaches and migraines through physical therapy exercises and manipulation.

Please don't hesitate to call and schedule an appointment at any of our four office locations. We can help get rid of the pain from headaches or migraines through the best combination of chiropractic care, physical therapy and therapeutic massage treatment options available.

Tension Headaches

Chiropractic adjustment for your neck may help if you have tension headaches. These are a common type of headache that causes pain in the back of your head and neck. Stress and bad posture can cause tension headaches. At IPM, we may adjust your neck and give you some stretching exercises. We might also suggest healthy ways to reduce stress and relieve your headaches, including proper posture and body mechanics.

Stress Headaches

Approximately three-quarters of all headaches are tension headaches, also called stress headaches. These create a dull soreness around the temples and behind the eyes on one side or both. Tension headaches can cause discomfort from your lower jaw to the top of your head. These and other tension headache symptoms often result from excessively tight neck and upper back muscles, which may lock or spasm. Suffering from misaligned posture or holding your neck and back in a fixed position (for example, at a desk at work) can exacerbate or bring about tension headaches.

Migraine Headaches

Research has shown that chiropractic spinal manipulations can decrease migraine frequency, decrease pain, and reduce the need for migraine medication. How this occurs is not known. The authors of the study suggest that chiropractic care reduces overall stress, which may, in turn reduce the effect of migraines. Triggers for migraine headaches may include certain foods. At IPM, we can also give you advice on nutrition and some changes in your diet to help treat migraines and other types of headaches.

Cervicogenic Headaches

Cervicogenic headaches are caused by referred neck pain. The pain from this type of headache is usually felt at the back of the head, in the temples, and/or behind the eyes. A cervicogenic headache may be mistaken for migraines or cluster headaches.

Are these conditions covered by insurance?

In most cases yes and we make sure we verify your coverage with your insurance company before any treatment begins. That way, if it isn't 100%, we can let you know how much of your plan is covered right from the start.

We are in-network with most PPO/POS plans (BCBS, Aetna, United Healthcare, Cigna and more), as well as some HMO plans, and Medicare. We also accept worker’s compensation and personal injury cases. Individualized payment plans are available to those without insurance coverage. We offer flexible payment options and are transparent about all costs. Find out more.
